The Radiation Belts of Jupiter and Saturn

چکیده

The era of outer planet orbiters (Galileo, Juno and Cassini) is advancing our understanding how the radiation belts Jupiter Saturn are structured, form evolve well beyond what had been possible during age flyby missions ground-based observations. nearly two decades-long datasets these missions, in context detailed long-term observations Earth's belts, highlight which processes that accelerate particles to relativistic kinetic energies limit their flux intensity can be considered more universal, thus key for most extraterrestrial magnetospheres, reflect unique aspects each its magnetospheric system. In this chapter we focus on in-situ belt theory, simulations relevant measurements by Earth-based observatories. We describe both average state time variations Jupiter's Saturn's associate them with specific physical processes.

Jupiter and Saturn Rotation Periods

Anderson & Schubert (2007, Science, 317, 1384) proposed that Saturn’s rotation period can be ascertained by minimizing the dynamic heights of the 100 mbar isosurface with respect to the geoid; they derived a rotation period of 10h 32m 35s. We investigate the same approach for Jupiter to see if the Jovian rotation period is predicted by minimizing the dynamical heights of its isobaric (1 bar pre...

Interior models of Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune

Interior model calculations of Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune require EOS-data of hydrogen, helium and water in the regime of warm dense matter. In case of Saturn, the pressure in the deep interior rises up to 15 Mbar at 600010000 K and a hydrogen mass fraction of at least 40%. In Jupiter, due to his larger total mass compared to Saturn, the high-pressure region is more extended with pressures up ...

Comparative Evolution of Jupiter and Saturn

We present evolutionary sequences for Jupiter and Saturn, based on new nongray model atmospheres, which take into account the evolution of the solar luminosity and partitioning of dense components to deeper layers. The results are used to set limits on the extent to which possible interior phase separation of hydrogen and helium may have progressed in the two planets. When combined with static ...

A Comparison of the Interiors of Jupiter and Saturn

Interior models of Jupiter and Saturn are calculated and compared in the framework of the three-layer assumption, which rely on the perception that both planets consist of three globally homogeneous regions: a dense core, a metallic hydrogen envelope, and a molecular hydrogen envelope. Within this framework, constraints on the core mass and abundance of heavy elements (i.e. elements other than ...

Dynamics of Jupiter Trojans during the 2:1 mean motion resonance crossing of Jupiter and Saturn

In the early phase of the Solar System evolution, while the outer planets migrated due to their interaction with a planetesimal disk, Jupiter may have crossed the 2:1 mean motion resonance with Saturn. It is well known (Morbidelli et al. 2005) that this dynamical event has profound consequences on the evolution of an alleged initial Trojan population of Jupiter. In this paper, we analyse in det...
